Gilles Clément (1943), a lecturer at L'Ecole Nationale Supérieure du Paysage in Versailles and a writer, has influenced a whole generation of European landscape architects with his theories and achievements, including the Parc André Citroen and the Quai Branly Museum in Paris.

He has published several books. In The Environment Alternative he writes, “The planetary garden demands that we urgently change gardeners. Man must make himself the guarantor of life on the planet. Each creature carries out its becoming within an ecosystem, each ecosystem is linked to its neighbor and together with the planet. In nature we need to immerse ourselves, to accept ourselves as beings of nature, to revise our position in the universe, to no longer place ourselves above and at the center, but within and with. What surrounds us is no longer landscape, theater, panorama, but that which we have been given to inhabit”.

This short essay by gardener Gilles Clément should accompany, periodically, our readings to keep our consciousness alive about the effects that our behavior has on our planet.
